While A&K’s flagship A&ultima series (SP3000) for sure gets all the glory, it’s easy to forget about the A&norma lineup which typically takes portions of tech from the TOTL series, and turns them into class-leading designs at lower prices. Enter the SR35 with its quad-DAC, new amp under the hood, compact form-factor (one of the smallest among high-end DAPs), new and improved ‘Crimson’ UI, and excellent battery life at 20 hours of playback. It’s well-built with typical, top-notch A&K fit and finish, and provides a premium feel for 800 bucks.

Quad DAC Mode for True Hi-FI Sound

For the first time in the A&norma series, the SR35 deploys the Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC in Quad configuration. In addition, A&K incorporates its unique technical collaboration between the DAC and patented TERATON ALPHA tech for outstanding advancement in dynamics, space, resolution, and separation. A Dual/Quad DAC switch mode is also offered enabling users to adjust and improve power mgmt. efficiency.

New Generation Amp

The SR35 is equipped with New Generation AMP tech previously exclusive to the A&ultima line, a unique design that improves noise reduction at high power output. The SR35 now contains the same amp design as the latest A&ultimate and A&futura products. Moreover, in order to reliably operate at varying impedances, the output current handling capability is increased to maximize the performance across all devices.

2-Step Gain Mode

The SR35 supports a 2-step Gain Level mode to create the perfect match for a wide range of headphones and IEMs for seamless use of both sensitive and hard-to-drive devices. Both 'Normal Gain' and 'High Gain' modes can generate a high current output to create a powerful sound and excellent driver control with up to 6Vrms from the balanced connections.

Enjoying the A&K SR35 just purchased from Bloom Audio. Easy to download audio files, and music sounds better than IPod I was using. Still awaiting new in-ear headphones which I expect will enhance music experience further..

Great player for the price

Just got mine from Bloom 2 weeks ago. This player needs about 10-20 hours of burn-in to reach its peak performance. Until then, the high frequencies will sound just a little harsh, but still OK. After burn-in, everything sounds great. I definitely suggest you stick with the Quad DAC option as this provides a much better sound at the cost of a somewhat shorter battery life before the next recharge (not an issue for me). I tried messing with the equalizer but found it way too difficult to use with my fat fingers and the small screen. I could never get the sound to approach the quality of just leaving the equalizer off. I find equalizers to generally be problematic to the sound anyway. Screen display is small and takes a little getting used to, but not a problem. I previously used an Astell&Kern SE100 (bought in 2019) until the battery lost its holding power. This player cost over twice the SR35 price, and the SR35 is an equal to my ears. It's impressive that a player at this price point can sound so good.

The SR35 is an upgrade for me from the SR25.
The graphics look sharper. I am still figuring out the differences between the two players.
The unit works so similar to the older version it was plug & play for me.
The music quality is outstanding and pretty much plays all the formats of music I have!

Astell&Kern A&norma SR35 | Digital Audio Player

Great sound, convenient, can hold 1TB

Great player. Size of a cell phone. One of the few players full stop to hold 1TB of music files, my complete mp3 collection being just under, with 6,000 album titles. Took 17 hours to transfer from my external drive through my computer so did it in four stages. Easy to hook up to my Rokit 5 monitors. Reminds me of the old days when we had a CD or record player, feels like I have a Hi-fi system again. This will stream too, but as a musician I boycott streaming as those companies exploit musicians, but really great player overall, and yes the quality is crisp and clear!
