This is a massive step up from the Topping L 70 headphone amplifier which will be my main comparison. At first I thought I pretty much threw away my money because they sound identical, and they pretty much do when first powered on, but after a week or so my opinion changed.
The power supply quality (suppression of various AC/ground noise) and heat dissipation capabilities of the A70 pro are vastly superior. Even the small amount of switching noise from a <$100 pure sine wave inverter feeding a Furman PST-8 (power conditioner) adds artefacts (after some time - not the first 15 minutes) and adversely impacts soundstage presentation (severely) on the L70. Plugging it into inadequate "dirty" AC main - forget it. Not to mention the L70 gets hot fast, especially with GRND switch up.
A70 takes quite some time to get hot, and basically won't unless you leave the GRND switch up for hours on end without proper ventilation. With semi "dirty" AC and inadequate noisy ground at that - just a Furman PST-8.
Somehow, the A70 pro also is the best amp I've tried for very low resistance IEMs like ThieAudio Origin (9 ohms) although you can surely do better (and cheaper) for that use case.
Slaps the Aune S9c ($699) DAC+AMP combo up and down the road even when attached (just for a test) to the $99 (open box) Topping E30 II DAC because of the massively improved dynamics. Via $15 RCA cables at that.
I wanted an amp that can do everything - that is what I got. Nothing has made me even leave low gain yet.
If you have clean AC and quality grounding the value proposition plummets unless you really need the power or features. I'm not rewiring a rental home - perfect for me.
Big thanks to Marty & Matthew for the world class industry defining customer service. Seriously. Personal sentiment excluded you should still buy here so you actually have a warranty as they will enforce it - they price match with apos.audio too FYI :)
