Searching for Perfect Harmony in a Tribrid IEM

Since the application of electrostatic driver for in-ear earphones, products with electrostatic units have emerged one after another, but they have been criticized for reasons such as "unaccept able tone" or "difficult to drive".

The development of Variations adopts our previous experience in the development of EST + BA hybrid and EST + DD hybrid earphones. With 3D printing, a precise physical filter structure and frequency divider circuit are manu factured to produce excellent amplitude-frequency response and phase-frequency response. Conveys the perfect harmony of the sound and imaging.

Ergonomic fit for the ear canal and Skin-friendly texture design

Variations continues the ergonomic design of multi-unit composite earphones, which can fit the human ear canal comfortability. The cavity is made of medical resin 3D printing. Hand polished and finely sandblasted design for skin-friendly surface, which not only has an excellent texture, but also fits the ear canal more comfortably. It looks elegant when the fine sandblasting stainless steel panel fits with the frosted cavity.

The bass driver adopts the newly developed 10mm liquid crystal diaphragm composite copper inner cavity diaphragm dynamic driver. The liquid crystal polymer liquid crystal polymer diaphragm with a thickness of only 9um has balanced compliance and domping. Dual balanced armature drivers are customized by Softears, which is not only transient and excellent in detail, but also exhibits amplitude-frequency characteristics that high meet the requirements of Variation design, which complements the DD and the EST drivers. The Variations treble driver adopts Sonion's new high-power version of one-to-two compound double electrostatic tweeter, which bring high-efficiency, dymanic, and excellent resolution to the high pitch.

In order to achieve excellent frequency response and consistent phase across all frequencies, Variations inherited and improved the hybrid crossover design of Blessing2. Through the 3D printed precision acoustic channel combined with domping materials to achieve low-frequency physicol bond-pass filtering and medium-high-frequency low-pass smoothing filtering, coupled with accurate RC low-poss filter circuit, high- pass filter circuit and equalization circuit, Variations con show very ideal frequency response and phase indicators.

Excellent Acoustic Performance through Masterful 3D Printing

In order to accurately achieve the complex physical filtering intermal structure of Variations and avoid the acoustic structure error, an ultra high-precision 3D printing process is needed, so we cooperate with the well-known 3D printing supplier "HeyGears Technology" to apply its mature high-precision DLP 3D printing technology and use imported medical-grade UV resin to produce high precision, high transparency, high hardness, and accurate complex cavity.

Advanced transducer unit and rigorous acoustic structure design, coupled with carefully polished physical filtering and crossover circuits, make Variations outstanding results in both linear and nonlinear distortions. Frequency Response is tuned based on MOONDROP VDSF Target Response (calculated by combining B&K HATS diffusion field HRTF and room reverberation curve) to bring a true and accurate longitudinal sound field and present the sound quality that can accurately restore the bring a true accurate longitudinal soundstage and an original restored sound timbre.

Good, but is it worth it?

This IEM is one of the EST-implemented IEMs that is crowded with comparisons at its price point, and it certainly is competitive, but may not be the best among the crowd.

Testing equipment used:
Moondrop MIAD01(yes, their own mobile phone DAP)
Asus Motherboard with ALC4080 Codec and Savitech SV3H712 AMP

First, the cable is really nice, one of the nicer ones of many IEMs I personally have that's more expensive on the chart. It is lightweight, very durable, and not easy to self-tangle itself, which is a nice plus(there are cables out there that are so heavy, drag IEM out of your ear during normal use, and don't even have a cable clip).

The ear tips are what made me subtract 0.5 points from them. The Moondrop Crinacle Dusk's spring tips(which are Moondrop proprietary in-house ones) are the best ear tips(subjectively) to use on a Moondrop IEM, and while the Variations are priced higher than Dusk, it just comes with garbo ear tips, so I have to buy Spring Tips from china and while its shipping I rolled some Spin Fit W1 SS tips, so far so good.

Sound quality:

Mediocre, at best, for the price point it's asking, you would definitely double-think before buying. Long story short, it's on the muddy end of EST implementations, definitely performs, but requires a lot of power to drive, and sometimes for the same song you listen it performs worse than the Dusk. Also, on the price point, I found the Hisenior Mega5EST 7th anniversary edition to be outperforming the Variations in terms of surgical clarity and neutrality. The Variations is definitely warm-tuned, to a degree it's not very applicable to some use cases, for example, gaming. When I tried gaming on the Variations, its muddiness made me unable to hear enemies' footsteps, and it generally performs worse than an Epos H6 Pro Openback, which is at a fraction of the Variations price.

So overall consideration, it's a good one, but not recommended, for sound clarity you can go Dusk and save some bucks, if want the EST thrill, there's Hisenior Mega5EST at the same price, but with better musicality. The cable is nice, but the tips aren't(that's my biggest gripe since Moondrop does make good tips but they chose not to implement them to their 500$ IEMs but for those 200-300$ ones). Also, these come with no nozzles nor filters, which you can buy official filters on their aliexpress website, again, something they could have easily added to prevent future warranty claims of earwax falling into the sound ducts, they have them on Kato and Kadenz, not the Variations...

Still a Top Contender

Even tho the Variations have been out for quite some time they still represent great value, especially on sale. Well tuned with very nice bass thump when called for, super clear and clean mids, bright and shimmery treble, all well balanced and very musical. I also have the Dunu SA 6 Mark 2 at around the same price and much prefer the Moondrops. Nits to pick: the cable is a tangle loving mess (tho it sounds great), and the nozzles are too thick for some ear tips, small prices to pay for the sonic performance.
