Excellent Streaming Transport That Puts Sound Quality First

I’ve owned my T8 that I purchased from Bloom for a few weeks now (shout out to the awesome team at Bloom for their unbeatable service quality!). During this time I’ve experimented with as much functionality as I can to get a feel for all aspects of the user interface and overall listening experience. I have my T8 hooked up via optical to the optical input on a Marantz M1 with DIRAC Live license, which drives a pair of MoFi SourcePoint 8 stand mounts and integrated to a Rythmik L12 subwoofer at 80Hz (all which gets DIRAC Live corrected from 12.5-350Hz, since the sub reaches down to 12Hz flat in my room).

I’ve been listening to a combination of my own personal library (a mix of DSD, DXD, and lesser resolution PCM) stored to an NVMe drive in the belly of the T8, Apple Music via both, Eversolo’s native, landscape integration as well as high-res via Apple’s own side-loaded app, and high-res Qobuz via both, Qobuz Connect and native Qobuz support built into the Eversolo UI. All DSP/PEQ/room correction in the Eversolo is disabled, so that I could get a proper comparison against my previous streamer before this upgrade (a WiiM Ultra).

First the positives: the UI in the iPhone, iPad, and Android OS apps is fantastic, and easily the only streamer app I’ve used that can compare to WiiM Home App for ease of use/intuitiveness. The streamer itself is rock solid stable and I never had a single crash out or freeze up, and the WiFi connection has been solid, with not a single connection hiccup of any kind. Sound is absolutely excellent, as one would expect from a unit of this caliber. I also tested attaching a USB CD-/DVD-ROM drive for both, listening to CDs and also ripping CDs to the installed NVMe drive and it works beautifully, effortlessly pulling album cover art and track data as soon as the disc is inserted and automatically starting playback. The streamer cannot actively stream & play music, say, from Qobuz or Apple Music while simultaneously ripping a CD, but it’s also not something I actually expected of it (just tested it to see if there might be a pleasant surprise to be found). I did also test sending music from Audirvāna on my MacBook to the T8 via UPnP and that too was rock solid (better than I can say for my WiiM Ultra).

One small flaw I found was that there was a low hum from the unit that could be heard from a couple feet away while the unit is on, but not playing music. Turning the unit off made the hum go away, and playing music easily drowns the hum out. I sit eight feet away when listening, so the hum itself was never a huge bother. Nevertheless, I purchased and installed an iFi DC Blocker+ on a whim, and that significantly reduced the hum to the point where I need to basically place my ear right at the unit to still hear it. Finally Eversolo’s EDRC room correction is just okay. I’ve tried a number of room correction algorithms and at this time I’d rank EDRC as least good/effective and wouldn’t bother with it. WiiM’s RoomFit performs better, although still not great. DSPeaker’s Anti-Mode 3.0 (on units such as their X2 and X2D DSP units) is MUCH better, both easier to calibrate and results in far better quality results, and finally I rank DIRAC Live as the gold standard still, especially with devices that allow multiple saved profiles, such as miniDSP Flex or the Marantz M1. I keep one profile calibrated to the main listening position only for critical listening and a second profile calibrated to a wide seating area for movie watching and background music listening when I work from home. If Eversolo had put DIRAC Live integration or at least supported applying a license at separate cost, I’d give this transport a perfect five stars, but as such, I had to dock it one star for the mediocre performance of EDRC.

Long story short, HIGHLY recommend the T8, ESPECIALLY, but far from limited to people who want to stream Apple Music in lossless high-res as well as those who keep a personal library on an NVMe or m.2 drive. The UI is fantastic and stable and the sound, of course, is excellent.

Amazing unit! Just simply the best!
